Research shows shocking level of time frittered away in the office

Staff are abusing the goodwill of their employers by using work time to waste an average of one hour and 54 minutes of their working day each day, according to new research.

The poll, by PeoplePerHour, finds staff waste this time going online to pay bills, chatting to colleagues, or using social media, and the value of this lost productivity is estimated to be £34 billion per year.

It discovered 28% admit to wasting 1-2 hours per day, while 24% say they waste up to 3 hours a day.

Worse still 29% admitted they wasted more than 3 hours per day.

Xenios Thrasyvoulou, founder of PeoplePerHour, said: “Staff are literally wasting time on social media or twiddling their thumbs or even just staring into space during the working day.”

If employees used this same amount of time working for themselves, PeoplePerHour estimates staff could earn themselves an extra £68 million per year.
