Harrods, the world’s most famous department store, has increased its benefits offering with the Car Benefit Scheme from market leaders, Tusker.

Staff at the prestigious flagship store in Knightsbridge, offices in London and Thatcham, as well as the smaller airport concessions, now have the opportunity to drive a brand new car, which they access via a bespoke benefits app.

Having conducted a comprehensive review of the benefits available to organisations, the Car Benefit Scheme was identified as a great benefit to aid with retention and motivation of employees, as well as boosting the attraction of talent in the future.

Gillian Round, Benefits, Recognition & Engagement Impact Manager, recalls, “When our Head of Employee Experience, Niall Ryan-Jones began to look into employee engagement, he found that benefits across the business had stagnated. There was nothing of interest for many of our employees.”

Niall identified the Car Benefit Scheme as an opportunity to provide a tangible, highly sought-after benefit for employees, as part of a wider overhaul of the offering. It was for this reason that Harrods decided to implement the scheme.

Harrods saw a great deal of interest in the scheme, with employees wanting to know more about the all-inclusive aspect, where employees are offered a brand new car, complete with insurance, road tax, servicing, breakdown cover and tyres, for a fixed monthly amount.

“It’s an attractive benefit – it’s simple to join the scheme and it takes away the complication of buying a car for our employees. A lot of people don’t like the idea of negotiating a good price for a new car and this takes all of that away – and you know you’re getting a great deal.”

Launching the scheme with a competition to win a Smart Car, meant the benefits scheme instantly attracted a huge amount of attention from employees across the business. Round comments, “We were looking to raise awareness of the Car Benefit Scheme and the other benefits we were launching and this seemed like a great way to drive traffic to our benefits app.”

There were also queries about salary sacrifice and the tax efficiencies, which Tusker and the HR team were well prepared to deal with. Round continues, “There have been a few questions about salary sacrifice as its been in the news quite a bit, but we’ve had a lot of information from Tusker about the savings still available to employees so we’ve been able to reassure those individuals.”
