The salary sacrifice technology scheme has increased engagement with the overall benefits package, and improved employee financial wellness

With a benefits package originally limited to those standardly offered by NHS organisations, such as childcare vouchers and ad hoc discounts, Hywel Dda University Health Board has innovated its employee offering.

Working with Let’s Connect, the organisation has launched a home technology salary sacrifice scheme: main packages include desktop computers, laptops, smart phones, iPads and smart TVs, while employees can also get accessories such as radios, headphones, Apple Watches and so on.

“It really helps salaries go further – in today’s financial climate by implementing something like this where employees can make savings on their tax and National Insurance, then that is a real benefit,” comments Andrea Thomas, Senior Terms, Conditions & Benefits Manager at Hywel Dda.

“It also links into our engagement and our company values, and we do feel that staff appreciate what we offer.”

With consistent take-up, especially in the run-up to Christmas, employee feedback shows that the scheme is easy to use with a good range of products available – all of which are fully insured.

And the scheme has also improved penetration into the wider employee benefits offering of the board: many staff who have taken up the scheme have now signed up for other benefit schemes on offer.

“It is a key engagement tool,” says Thomas. “From our point of view salary sacrifice schemes are really beneficial. Technology salary sacrifice definitely has an impact on financial wellness for the workforce – and for us, as an organisation.”

Let’s Connect have been instrumental in setting up the scheme, and helping with the administration and ongoing support – and Thomas comments that since they first launched the scheme they have learned, developed and improved.

And the future is about continued innovation:

“We’ve recently added to the package with a car lease scheme, for example,” enthuses Thomas. “If it’s available, we’ll add to it!”
